Evaluate your private investigator (PI)
before you entrust your case to him. Before you engage a
private investigator to undertake your case, you need to
know how capable and trustworthy he is. The following are
some points to assist in your evaluation.
| • |
Do not meet the private
investigator outside his office. Visit the PI’s
office to see how is their set-up as some private investigators
operate from mobile phone by means of transferring a
landline telephone number to his mobile phone, or he
does not even operates a proper office. |
| • |
Make sure the PI firm and PIs conducting
your case are insured. |
| • |
Make sure your private investigatorhas
a valid licence. The private investigator should have
it displayed in his office. |
| • |
Make sure your private investigator
has many years of experience in private investigation
to conduct your case. He may be an ex-CIA, ex-FBI, etc.
but he MAY NOT have the experience in how a PI operates.
A good private investigator requires the number of years
of experience, proper-training in PI work as well as
advanced equipment to gather evidence. |
| • |
Make sure you get a contract indicating
the job scope you are engaging him for. |
| • |
Make sure that your private investigator
do not just buy information from the internet or search
companies and selling such information to you with a
huge mark-up. Some PI firms even posted searches which
are provided by data companies/organisation such as
Corporate Searches, International Searches/Personal
Searches, Litigation/Writ of Summons Searches, etc.,
which could be obtainable easily from organisations
such as Accounting & Corporate Regulatory Authority
(ACRA), DP Information Group, Info Asia, etc. |
| • |
Can the private investigator you hired
testify in a court of law? If he can, has he testified
and how often has he done so? |
